How should Parks Canada share the story of Abbot Pass Hut?
over 1 year agoCLOSED: This ideas has concluded.Your ideas will help inform decisions such as:
- How could salvaged components of the hut could be used in interpretation?
- Are there existing initiatives that are worthy of additional support?
- Should commemorative activities include monuments on the landscape, educational programs, commemorative art or exhibitions, scientific research and knowledge-building, some combination of these things, or something else?
Some decisions cannot be influenced by public engagement:- What kinds of activities are permitted at Abbot Pass
- New place names in the Lake Louise area
- Permanent exhibits inside the Lake Louise Visitor Centre
- New habitable structures built at Abbot Pass or elsewhere
A working group, led by the Alpine Club of Canada, plans to submit a development proposal for a new structure in place of Abbot Pass Hut. Parks Canada has not yet received a formal application. While a proposal for a future hut may be informed by public engagement, that future proposal is separate from this engagement process.

Consider commemoration of the hut at/in front of the historic Swiss Guides House on the shore of Lake Louise. This could include partial reconstruction of a segment of wall from the historic structure. Alternatively, do this at/near the Plain of Six Glaciers Tea House or Lake Oesa. Consider including historical architectural elements collected from the hut in the design of the replacement hut (allow the proponents to use the doors, windows, woodstove, etc. in construction of the new hut to keep them near the site and to maintain a historical connection to the old building). Physical components of historical value should be retained within the park (as opposed to warehousing by the parks collections department elsewhere) and displayed publicly (if not as described above) on a permanent basis.

Build a bigger hut to accommodate more people.
0 comment1don't need a new/ old hutalmost 2 years agoIt's a very good example of climate change and should be highlighted as such. Do not replicate history, we need to learn/ adapt from it.
I do not want to see a new substantial hut here. A modest shelter maybe because people are still going to come. Let's learn to adjust our expectations and scale it back.
